Published as a companion to the 2009 commemorative edition of The Settler’s Dream: A Pictorial History of the Older Buildings of Prince Edward County, the Location Key provides readers with the civic address numbers of the properties included in The Settler’s Dream in order to locate particular houses or buildings. Original map illustrations are included as well as space for notes.
With no 911 numbers in the original 1984 publication, finding the precise locations of properties in The Settler’s Dream was difficult and in some cases impossible. With the help of the Prince Edward County Historical Society, the Architectural Conservancy of Ontario (Quinte Branch), and the Prince Edward Heritage Advisory Committee, The Prince Edward County History and Heritage Publications Group took on the task of researching the 911 numbers for each of the three hundred and thirty-one properties in The Settler’s Dream.
Over the years many of the properties have been renovated or changed to suit the taste of current owners. The Publications Group’s research involved eye witness identification of each property, recording the 911 address, and updating the status of the property so that readers interested in specific buildings won’t waste time looking for altered or demolished properties. The Group’s extensive research led to the creation of this Location Key. The 36-page booklet is broken down by County ward and is laid out to correspond exactly with the listings in The Settler’s Dream. It cross indexes the reference numbers and page numbers of the book and details the property name and its address.
With their original mandate accomplished, the working group disbanded and reformed to research the civic addresses of the properties, (civic addresses did not exist when the “The Settler’s Dream” was first printed in1984). A “Property Location Key” for “The Settler’s Dream” was first 1st published 2013, with a 2ndprinting (2015), and a 3rd (2021). The Key includes the civic address of the properties featured in the “The Settlers Dream” and whether the property has been abandoned or demolished.
