During the nineteenth century, Captain Downes was a prominent citizen of Picton, holding such positions as Justice of the Peace, Captain of the local militia, and County Clerk Treasurer. His residence, after 1857, is still preserved at the corner of Townes Avenue and Main Street, Picton. During his time here he created a number of pencil interpretations of Prince Edward County, twelve of which are reproduced by Prince Edward County Historical Society for all to enjoy.
