Chris Lockyer was born in 1898 in Middlesex, England. In 1912, his parents, George and Martha Lockyer, moved their young family to a farm in Picton, Ontario. Chris was just 17 years old when he enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force during WW1. In August 1917, the Canadians were fighting to capture Hill 70 near the city of Lens. Chris was serving with the 2nd Battalion running messages from the front lines back to the senior command staff when he was killed. His body was never found.
Private Chris Lockyer’s name is engraved on the War Memorial in Picton. The story of his sacrifice was highlighted in the 2018 History Moments Series.
