A beautiful guidebook about the Glenwood Chapel and its richly symbolic stained-glass windows is being published this spring. In this YouTube presentation, Sarah Hall, CM, RCA, author of the guidebook offers a glimpse into the fascinating world of the Glenwood Chapel’s Stain glass windows.
Built in 1901, the Chapel has an intriguing history, and the windows are unusual in that they were commissioned by and reflect the symbolism of several fraternal organizations of the time. Pictured here is a detail from the window donated by the Independent Order of Foresters. The window was made by the glass studio of Nathanial Theodore Lyons in Toronto and installed in 1902. The All-Seeing Eye was used to symbolize God’s continual observance of people’s thoughts and deeds.
The guidebook provides a detailed description of the Chapel’s windows and their meanings, as well as the story of this unique and interesting building. A book launch is scheduled for Sunday June 4 at 2pm in the Glenwood Chapel, Picton ON. Check www.GlenwoodCemetery.ca for more details.
