Hudgin House Restoration
The historic Moses Hudgin Log House was constructed in the 1860’s on Ostrander Point Road by Marysburgh settler Moses Hudgin. Built to house his wife and nine children, this is one of the last original log houses remaining in Prince Edward County. The house has been in the Hudgin family until recently when it was acquired by the Nature Conservancy of Canada along with the surrounding acreage which will be conserved in its natural state. The old log house itself is being restored by a Prince Edward County community organization, the South Shore Joint Initiative in conjunction with the Prince Edward Historical Society. The project is being led by heritage restoration architect, Edwin Rouse.
On completion of the restoration, the building will be used by local naturalists for use as a field house. Historical interpretive exhibits will also be included. Restoration is scheduled to be completed by the summer of 2022.
The estimated cost of restoring the Moses Hudgin Log House is $100,000.
UPDATE as of September 27, 2021:
Volunteers have cleared and cleaned the inside and outside of our log house.
Our main contractor informed us they cannot carry out the scheduled structural restoration work due to Covid.
As we reschedule structural repair, we are approaching local tradespeople in the hopes of beginning some inside work to MHLH this fall and winter.
Connecting Hudgin House to the electricity grid via underground cable is on schedule and will be completed soon.
$60,000 has been raised.
On Saturday, Aug. 22 – For the second year in a row, Monarch enthusiasts flocked to Hudgin House in the South Shore to celebrate this iconic butterfly.
Everyone who attended was captivated by the sight of 154 Monarch butterflies being tagged and released by legendary Monarch Tagger Don Davis.
